It’s been slow

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

There just hasn’t been a lot going on here recently.  It’s harvest time, I guess.   And stuff.  What?   But I did see this court reporter-embellished note worthy of mention — because the DA’s office takes zealous advocacy very seriously!

>>Gregory Young failed to fill out his fishing license. Tim Stoen, lead attorney for the DA’s office on the coast, argued in vain for a full, standard sentencing. Judge Lehan believed Young’s story and fined him on the infraction level. He will owe the court $563.<<

Voters reject mall

So, Measure A, which “threatened” to put a strip mall into somewhere downtown Ukiah didn’t pass.  Folks were REALLY opposed to it, claiming Costco was going to come in and destroy Ukiah’s small town character/businesses (NB: Costco published a letter requesting that the campaign stop using its name because it never, ever had any intention of moving into Ukiah — but I digress).  The campaign against Measure A was truly one of the most impressive I’ve ever experienced.  We got phone calls and flyers almost every week.  Posters were plastered on the windows of virtually every local business.  Campaign workers were stationed outside the Post Office.  It was non-stop petitioning right down to the wire.  But I attribute the success of this particular campaign to its simple three-word slogan: “NO ON A.” Clearly, these campaign workers know the constituency.  ”Dude, what are we supposed to do?”  ”Um, vote No on A?  And stuff.   What?”

Schlosser pleads guilty

Schlosser, as you might recall (but probably not), was arrested in Utah after police found 162 lbs of marijuana in her car.  Now some people might think that is enough to earn you a story in the Ukiah Daily Digest…but Schlosser has another claim to fame.  She is the “wife of Bert Schlosser who works as a public defender for the Alternate Defender’s office and made a bid for district attorney in 2007.”  Awesome.
