Successful Campaigning 101
So, Measure A, which “threatened” to put a strip mall into somewhere downtown Ukiah didn’t pass. Folks were REALLY opposed to it, claiming Costco was going to come in and destroy Ukiah’s small town character/businesses (NB: Costco published a letter requesting that the campaign stop using its name because it never, ever had any intention of moving into Ukiah — but I digress). The campaign against Measure A was truly one of the most impressive I’ve ever experienced. We got phone calls and flyers almost every week. Posters were plastered on the windows of virtually every local business. Campaign workers were stationed outside the Post Office. It was non-stop petitioning right down to the wire. But I attribute the success of this particular campaign to its simple three-word slogan: “NO ON A.” Clearly, these campaign workers know the constituency. ”Dude, what are we supposed to do?” ”Um, vote No on A? And stuff. What?”
